A hero 4th-grade student Amerie Jo Garza has been identified as one of the first victims in the Robb Elementary School mass shooting.
Her family remembers her as a hero who celebrated her birthday only two weeks before she was shot dead, her grandmother told PEOPLE magazine.
Berlinda Arreola said that the 10-year-old was one of the first children shot by Salvador Ramos.

Amerie was trying to dial the police on her cell phone when she was killed.
“He could have just taken her phone away,” Arreola says. “He could have just broke it, done something. And he just shot her.”
“She was a hero trying to call 911, to save her and her friends,” says the grieving grandmother.
The motive for the mass shooting that killed 21 people, including 19 students in Texas, has not been discussed by investigators.
The gunman shot his grandmother, who has survived her injuries so far, before he went to the school.
