Juana Andreou, a Victorian jockey, is still in critical but stable condition in the same intensive care unit where her husband Jesse was barely a year ago.
In a sad turn of events, Andreou is now battling for her own life after bringing Jesse back from the edge after complications from bowel surgery.
Andreou was struck in the head by a horse at Flemington last Monday and was taken by ambulance to the Royal Melbourne Hospital.
She had somewhat strayed from riding but was still eager to go on rides when they presented themselves.
Elissa Meredith fell in Gunnedah on the same day as Andreou’s accident, and Leah Kilner suffered significant injuries in a race fall at Grafton the day before Andreou’s accident.
While Meredith and Kilner have made consistent progress in their recoveries, Andreou’s situation continues to be day by day.
She is still in a fairly strong induced coma, according to Jesse.
To halt the bleeding and relieve pressure on the brain, Andreou initially needed two procedures, but Jesse said the focus is now solely on medication and relaxation.
