Ryan Grantham, who plays the role of Barry in the movies Riverdale and Diary of a Wimpy Kid, was found guilty of the murder of his mother and was sentenced to life in prison for the crime.
A judge from the British Columbia Supreme Court in Vancouver handed down the 24-year-old defendant’s sentence on Monday, following his guilty plea to second-degree murder. The defendant will spend the rest of his life behind bars.
The death of Grantham’s mother, Barbara Waite, took place on March 31, 2020, when she was 64 years old.
According to a report by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), the prosecution stated in court that the actor shot his mother in the back of the head while she was playing the piano.
According to the article, the court was shown a video that was filmed on a GoPro shortly after Grantham shot the.22 rifle. In the video, Grantham confessed to the crime and presented his mother’s corpse. The footage was provided to the court.
According to the allegations, Grantham also planned to “murder Prime Minister Justin Trudeau” the following day; however, he turned himself in to the authorities instead, which Ker referred to as a “saving grace.”
Ker brought up the fact that Grantham is receiving psychiatric therapy while he is behind bars and cited the actor’s persistent struggles with mental illness in support of his claim.
According to the article, Grantham expressed his regret to the judge and apologised for his actions in front of the jury.
During her testimony in the court case, Grantham’s sister referred to the passing of her mother as “life altering.”
The actor will not be eligible for release from prison for the subsequent 14 years.
