A teenager has been charged following the death of a child in a home in Balgownie, in the early hours of Tuesday. The boy, who was 12 years old, was found seriously injured inside the house.
He was taken to the hospital but later died. The incident occurred less than an hour after police found a car wrapped around a traffic light in nearby Towradgi.
After inspecting the vehicle, which was stolen from Koonawarra, they found its occupants had already fled. Police were able to establish links between the incident and the death of the boy.
A 17-year-old boy was arrested at a police station in the city about 6.00pm. He was taken to the police station after a public appeal was released.
He was charged with six counts, including dangerous driving and causing death by careless driving.
He was also accused of failing to stop and render aid after a vehicle had collided with a building, causing grievous bodily harm, and failing to report an accident involving an unlicensed driver.
Police confirmed earlier this week that they’re investigating if the TikTok trend is related to the incident of teenagers breaking into and stealing cars. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to contact Crime Stoppers or Wollongong Police.
