In Tasmania, a 19-year-old man was killed in a car crash early Friday morning. His 17-year-old passenger was taken to hospital with serious injuries.
Emergency services were called to the Midlands Highway at York Plains, near the town of Oatslands, after reports of a fatal crash involving a truck and a car.
According to Tasmania Police, the crash happened between a truck and a gold Volkswagen Sportage Wagon.
The driver of the Volkswagen was killed at the scene. His passenger, a 19-year-old from Western Australia, was taken to the Royal Hospital in a critical condition.
The truck driver, who was the only occupant of the vehicle, was uninjured.
Police are currently investigating the cause of the crash.
The incident has been referred to the state coroner. Worried motorists were asked to avoid the area, and the Midland Highway was closed for several hours.
In a statement, the police said their condolences to all families affected by the incident.
