Before he was even offered a job as an ambassador for the Melbourne Cup, Christian Wilkins had already contacted several fashion houses. He was immediately interested in learning more about their offerings. The Victoria Racing Club gave him an opportunity to apply, and he quickly reached out to Gucci.
Even though he wasn’t officially offered the job, Christian was thrilled to be part of the event. When one thinks of the spring carnival, images of flowing dresses, flower crowns, and elaborate headpieces come to mind. But, it’s not often that men can achieve the same level of excitement.
The appointment of Christian, who is a social media influencer with a rich pedigree, as the ambassador for the Melbourne Cup has marked a significant change in the club’s messaging. For the first time in its history, the fashion competition known as Fashions on the Field is gender-neutral.
The partnership between Christian and Gucci is a match made in heaven. For years now, he has been working to redefine what it means to be a male in Australia. He believes that being able to break the rules and allow people to express themselves is a key part of his life.
Despite the slow uptake of transgender individuals in Australia, the appointment of the VRC as an institution that is still historically significant has made him very excited to be part of the change. He also believes that it is a huge step in the right direction.
Most people ask Christian if he’s a man or a non-binary individual. He says that he doesn’t consider himself to be either gender. He claims that he identifies as non-binary, but he still uses the pronouns he/him. He also says that people are constantly discovering themselves.
He doesn’t feel that he has to constantly be looking in and out for something that feels right with him. He says that he’s happy and comfortable with who he is at the moment, and he’s hoping that one day, something will reflect who he is. While he has been openly talking about himself in the public, it hasn’t always been that way.
One of the first times that Christian met someone who knew that he was gay was when he went out. He says that the man who knew him told him that he would have to keep his father out of the loop and that he would never come out of the closet.
I always wanted to be in this industry, but I didn’t feel confident because I was afraid that people would judge me. It took me a while to get over that, as I knew that I wanted to be in it, but I was worried that I might not be accepted. His support from his family and friends helped him get over his fears. He also says that he was able to find like-minded individuals within the LGBTQ+ community.
