A young boy died and another was seriously injured after they got trapped in a garage door in West Melbourne on Saturday night.
Emergency services were called to a home in Mason Street, Newport, at around 7.20pm.
Nine-year-old Abdul Razack Tarawaley was pronounced dead at the scene, while a second person was taken to the Royal Children’s Hospital.
The second boy, who is believed to be around the age of 10, was reportedly injured after getting stuck in the garage door.
According to his father, Abdul was playing hide and seek with his friends when he got stuck.
According to the boy’s uncle, the family was angered by the lack of a safety mechanism that could have prevented the incident.
He also stated that the family tried to pull the gate down, but it was too heavy.
The uncle also stated that the garage door had a button that only went up and down, and kids can easily access it.
The incident is being investigated by the police, and they are not treating it as a suspicious case.
