A two-year-old boy was left to starve to death after his father died in their home in February, the police said.
The bodies of David and his 59-year-old father were found in their apartment in Geneva, which is about 75 kilometers southeast of Rochester and 90 kilometers southwest of the city of Syracuse.
The police cited a cause of death as cardiovascular disease.
The police were called to the apartment to carry out a welfare check after the father, identified as Manuel Conde, had not been seen in a couple of weeks.
The child was not in day care and was not able to eat properly after his father passed away.
In a statement, the police noted that it was believed that Mr. Conde died first.
The child’s mother was interviewed by the authorities, and the family could not be reached by telephone.
The couple was last seen on January 22.
Investigators have not found any signs of foul play in the apartment.
