The incident occurred at around 12:45 pm in the Moulden Terrace shopping centre in the Northern Territory.
A child died after he was hit by a car. St John Ambulance was dispatched to the scene, but they were unable to revive the child.
The police stated that there was “no chance” of saving the boy.
The driver, a 54-year-old man, was arrested after he tested positive for drugs. He was released while the investigation continues.
According to Brendan Linder, a detective with the Northern Territory Police, the death of the boy was a tragic incident.
The police believe that the boy was struck by a Dodge Ram ute as it attempted to reverse out of the parking space
. Instead of reversing, the vehicle “lurched forward” and pinned him against the wall of a bottle shop.
According to Sergeant Linder, the boy’s family was at the scene of the accident when it happened
. The incident has been described as a horrific death that occurred right around the time of the year when families are usually spending Christmas.
