The search for Frank Mellia, 39, who disappeared after telling his friends that he was going to the river in Melbourne, ended in tragedy when the body was found.
He was last seen at Taroona reserve in Warrandyte, about 3pm on Saturday.
Before calling the police, his friends tried to find him.
The area where he went missing is in the Warrandyte Forest State Reserve. Part of the river is an established walking track, and dense bush covers the other side.
The State Emergency Service and police have been searching the area using portable devices such as surfboards and water skis.
Divers and air wing members have been assisting in the search, which spans over four kilometers.
The police confirmed on Monday that a body had been found in the river.
Acting Sergeant Will Calleja, however, was unable to confirm if the man was a local or if he was visiting the area.
A massive search operation has been carried out, with the help of air wing members, police divers, boats, and foot patrols.
