An inmate at Perth’s Hakea Prison was charged with murder after the death of a convicted child sex offender, Ashley Bropho, who was found unresponsive on March 9.
The incident was reportedly brought to the attention of the authorities by the prison’s staff.
The 42-year-old inmate, who was serving a sentence for sexual offences against children, was charged with Bropho’s murder on Thursday.
He will appear in court via video link on Friday.
Bropho was scheduled to be sentenced in the District Court on March 3 after pleading guilty to molesting a girl, who was nine years old at the time.
He was under the supervision of a caregiver for the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) when he committed his crimes.
The WA Prison Officers Union earlier this month reported that tensions at the facility had been rising due to the understaffing and overcrowding.
