In response to the criticism, Coles has stated that it placed a popular breakfast item in a security lockbox at some of its stores.
A TikTok user named @TheOzLanderReturns shared footage of two different Capilano Manuka Honey varieties being placed under lock and key in his local store.
The 340 ml bottles of honey were being sold for $26, which is less than the $30 price that was previously offered.
In the clip, the user claimed that the product looked like a protective container.
The main difference between traditional honey and the more common types of honey is that the former has anti-inflammatory and antiviral properties.
A spokesperson for the company noted that only a few of its stores have placed security measures on the honey.
These are done to deter thieves. While the majority of its customers do the right things by shopping at the store, some stores do put additional measures on certain products.
The spokesperson said that customers can remove the protective container at the checkout.
