A man who was punched in the face outside a restaurant on the Gold Coast over the weekend has died. Michael Hayes, who was 39 years old, was on life support until he died on Thursday morning.
He was attacked by an unknown assailant outside the Destino Wine Bar in Sanctuary Cove. The incident is being treated as a homicide.
The incident happened outside the restaurant at around 9.20 pm on Saturday.
Hayes, who was from Hope Island, was with his friends when he was assaulted.
He was reportedly talking to a man when he was hit in the face.
Detective Chris Ahearn said that the man delivered a single punch to Hayes’ face.
The nature of the conversation between Hayes and the man who assaulted him is not known.
The police are trying to identify the suspect, who is believed to be in his 20s to 30s and has short dark hair.
According to Ahearn, there was nothing aggressive until the moment when Hayes was punched in the face.
The police are also appealing for witnesses who were in the area between 9 pm and 10 pm on Saturday.
These include people who saw the incident from their cars’ dashcams.
