A young child was taken away by police after they found him alone inside an apartment in Melbourne with the body of a woman, believed to be his mother.
It’s not clear how long the child was left inside the apartment, though 7NEWS was told by his neighbors that they had raised concerns about building management days earlier.
A welfare check was conducted on the woman at around 11.40 am on Wednesday at her Werribee apartment, and when police arrived, they found her deceased.
Although her cause of death is not clear, the police noted that it appeared to be non-suspicious. They are still investigating the incident.
A spokesperson for the Ambulance Service of Victoria confirmed that the child, who was a preschool age boy, was taken to a hospital in a relatively stable condition.
After the police found him, they took him to the hospital as a precaution. According to the police, the child was found unharmed, and he is currently being looked after by his relatives.
According to one of the neighbors, the child appeared to be struggling, and he needed medical attention.
They noted that they notified the police about the situation on Monday, but they only conducted a welfare check a few days later.
Unison manages the apartment complex where the child was found, and it provides lodging for individuals who are experiencing homelessness.
In response to the tragedy, the company released a statement to tell 7NEWS that it is providing support and counselling to the residents affected by the incident.
It’s believed that the company will look into the security cameras and the electronic pass of the woman in order to determine what happened in the apartment.
