Charley’s Steak House claims to be the first establishment in the U.S. to serve an entire plant-based steak.
The restaurant is currently selling the F U filet Mignon for $105.
The description of the item on its website refers to the steak as “freaking unbelievable by Chunk.”
An Israeli startup known as Chunk Foods claims to make plant-based meat products that are nutritious and delicious. It’s partly owned by Robert Downey Jr., who is known for his work on environmental issues.
Although other restaurants have started offering meat and vegan alternatives, Charley’s is the first establishment in the country to serve the plant-based version of the tenderloin.
According to Chunk’s CEO and founder, Amos Golan, the company’s plant-based steak is similar to other premium cuts of meat. He also noted that the company’s product has a clean ingredient list and excellent texture and taste.
However, the team behind Charley’s claimed that they were not able to detect a difference between the real and the vegan versions of the steak during a taste test.
According to Seth Miller, the vice president and chief operating officer of the company that operates Charley’s, the restaurant’s team had been searching for a way to serve plant-based steak to its vegetarian and vegan customers, but they were disappointed by the results.
Chunk’s plant-based steak uses a few ingredients, such as wheat, fermented soy, coconut oil, and B12. These ingredients are not included in the regular plant-based meat products.
A six-ounce portion of Chunk’s plant-based steak contains 40 grams of protein and zero cholesterol. According to Golan, the company’s technology was developed using years of scientific research.
He also noted that one of the biggest challenges that the industry faces is mimicking the taste and texture of traditional meat.
