Although Bali has long been regarded as an inexpensive vacation destination, Australians will have to pay a new tax to visit the island.
The new fee, which is only applied to international tourists, will be implemented on February 14.
According to Tjok Bagus Pemayun, the revenue will be used to protect the island’s natural environment and culture.
Although the tax will only be applicable to children, it can be paid at the airport or through the internet before traveling.
The fee is higher than the $50 visa-on-arrival fee that most tourists are already required to pay.
However, local officials have indicated that this fee might be abolished for travelers from other countries, such as Australia.
More than a million tourists visit Indonesia’s Bali every year, and Australians are the island’s biggest market.
Despite the new tax, Wayan Koster, the governor of Bali, said he was confident that the number of travelers would not decrease.
He noted that the revenue would be used to improve the island’s infrastructure and protect its environment.
