The controversy over Australia Day has resulted in some retailers, such as Bunnings, being dragged into the mix.
Woolworths has been the target of boycott calls due to its decision to remove all products from its stores ahead of the holiday.
Peter Dutton called the company’s decision outrageous and said it was humiliating for the employees.
Although it’s up to customers to decide whether or not they want to purchase products from Woolworths, I think that the public should boycott the company until it can demonstrate some common sense.
Pauline Hanson also criticized big businesses, saying that they didn’t learn from the outcome of last year’s Voice referendum.
Senator Hanson stated that big businesses in Australia were out of touch with the country’s residents.
She noted that companies such as Woolworths and Bunnings were not given the right to dictate what Australians should celebrate as the country marked its independence.
Senator Hanson noted that businesses did not have the right to determine what Australians should celebrate on January 26.
She said that a staff member at a Bunnings told her that the company’s employees were not allowed to wear clothing that was associated with Australia Day.
A spokesperson for the company said that there was no companywide policy regarding the wearing of certain apparel, but that its stores were free to mark the holiday in their local communities.
On Wednesday, the company revealed that it would not be selling any additional merchandise celebrating Australia Day in its stores.
