An elderly woman reportedly decided to leave her multi million dollar fortune to her pets due to the lack of care and visits from her children.
According to a news reports, the woman, who was referred to as Liu by the media outlet, drafted a will several times.
She left her three children a total of around four million dollars.
Due to the lack of visits and care from her children, she reportedly changed her will. She left her fortune to her pets. An official from Will Registration Centre noted that it is illegal to leave an entire estate to animals.
The official noted that the woman’s current will only serves as one option, and she should have appointed someone she trusts to look after her pets. Another official said that the woman could still change her mind at a later time.
The official from the Will Registration Centre’s branch said that the woman could still change her will once her children started to treat her better.
Maurice Blackburn, a law firm, explained that in Australia, pets are not considered beneficiaries in wills. However, people can still set up trusts for their pets.
According to the firm’s website, the money that was set aside for their care can be used to cover their daily expenses.
