Almost 17 years after Madeleine McCann disappeared from a Portuguese resort, an update on the case has been released.
The main suspect, Christian Brueckner, is set to go on trial in February for sexually assaulting a young girl and several other women.
Brueckner is accused of committing the crimes, which are said to have happened over a period of 17 years, while he was living in the area where Madeleine was abducted.
His lawyer argued that Helge Busching, a former friend of Brueckner, was a police informer who was lying when he testified against him.
Brueckner was named as a suspect in the case in 2018, thanks to the efforts of Helge, who was regarded as the “most important witness” against the suspect.
Through his testimony, the police were able to make him the main suspect in the case. According to him, he had stolen a video camera that contained tapes of Brueckner committing various sexual crimes.
During the time of the incident, which occurred a year before Madeleine disappeared, she was staying at the same resort with her family.
In Germany, in the year following her disappearance, Helge recalled a conversation he had with Brueckner. Brueckner allegedly said that it was odd that Madeleine didn’t scream during their conversation.
In 2017, Helge gave up his former friend’s name to the Scotland Yard’s Operation Grange team, which was around the 10-year anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance.
He also claimed that Bruecker confessed his involvement in the case during a kite festival in 2008. In 2020, he stated that he thought Brueckner was guilty.
Brueckner was not charged with any wrongdoing in connection with the disappearance of Madeleine McCann.
In an interview, Brueckner stated that he was speaking the truth and that he was willing to help the authorities in their investigation.
He said that he knew what happened during the incident that occurred before Madeleine vanished.
According to Brueckner, he will provide his own evidence during his trial, and he’s not lying. He claims that he will tell the truth even though Herr Fulscher claims otherwise.
