The petition, which has over 10,000 signatures, will be presented to the Senate tomorrow in an attempt to protect Keppel Island’s indigenous name from being changed.
Pauline Hanson of One Nation thanked the people of Australia for standing up to racial division.
Senator Pauline Hanson criticized Labor for failing to heed the sentiments of the people who voted in last year’s referendum, which rejected racial divisions.
She noted that the party continues to divide Queensland by implementing land transfers that do not involve community consultation and by trying to change the traditional place names of Keppel Island.
There are numerous places in Australia with indigenous names, such as Canberra.
One Nation supports the retention of such names as Mareeba, Goondiwindi, and Toowoomba
. Labor is also planning to change the name of Keppel Island, which is a tourism icon, to “Woppa” in recognition of its local indigenous word.
The Miles Labor government’s master plan document clearly states that the intention to change Keppel Island’s name is a deliberate attempt to ignore the sentiments of the people who voted in last year’s referendum.
When the issue was brought to Labor’s attention, the party claimed that it had no plans to change the name.
If One Nation wins the election in Queensland, it will protect the existing place names of the state and reverse the recent changes to them, such as the one on Fraser Island.
It will also work toward ensuring that all residents are treated equally.
