According to police, a bus in Sydney was driving erratically moments before it collided with another vehicle and several parked cars on Wednesday afternoon.
One of the drivers was critically injured and 12 passengers were taken to hospitals.
The accident occurred on Seventh Avenue in Campsie at around 4.15 pm, when 25 passengers were aboard the buses.
One witness said that everything suddenly turned black. She heard people screaming and saw one of the buses driving erratically before it crashed.
Dean Johnstone, a detective, said the bus was traveling at a high speed before it started to decrease its speed.
Johnstone said that the incident occurred after one of the buses hit a tree and caused its mirror to break.
As it made its way through Fifth Avenue, it collided with another bus, which then caused the first bus to hit three parked cars.
The calls to triple zero prompted a massive response from emergency services.
One of the drivers was trapped inside her seat due to the shattered windshield. The 63-year-old woman suffered serious injuries.
The other driver, who was 63 years old, was taken to the Concord Hospital with minor injuries. The incident was assessed by paramedics on the scene. All of the passengers were taken to the Royal Prince Alfred, Bankstown, and Concord hospitals. Andrew Bibby, the acting inspector of NSW Ambulance, praised the response of emergency services.
According to police, footage from the bus’s camera showed it traveling at varying speeds along Seventh Avenue before the accident. Detective Dean Johnstone said the investigation will focus on the possibility that the driver had a medical episode. The bus will be examined to determine if there was a mechanical issue that might have caused the crash.
