Investigations are focused on the driving of a former police officer who killed himself and a young woman in a tunnel in Brisbane.
Bruce Daley was 56 years old when his black Audi S3 collided with a silver Mazda 3 at around 3.10 pm on Wednesday.
The incident occurred in the Legacy Way tunnel.
The impact caused the sedan to hit a van. One of the passengers of the car died, while the driver was taken to hospital in a critical condition.
The two young women who were in the car were from South Australia and the Northern Territory.
A man in the van, who was 45-years-old, was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
The incident has not been referred to as a criminal matter by the police. Forensic experts are still conducting the investigation. The wreckage of both the sedan and the Audi were over a hundred meters long.
The police have asked people who saw the Audi driving in the area on Wednesday to contact them.
Daley, who used to be a police officer in Queensland, was 56 years old. He left the force to pursue a career in construction.
His wife posted a message on Facebook following his death, saying that he was the love of her life. According to reports, witnesses saw the car traveling at speeds of up to 200 kilometers per hour before the accident.
On Thursday, Detective Chris Hansel of the Queensland Police said that speed was a contributing factor to the accident.
He also noted that other factors were being considered.
The police are conducting an extensive investigation and are not ruling out the possibility that the crash was caused by a mental health issue.
He was also unable to provide other details about the incident, including why Daley left the police force.
However, he vowed to deliver answers to the families of the victims “sooner rather than later.” The police are currently carrying out an investigation that will last for months. According to the detective, multiple families have been affected by the accident.
