A young Kiwi couple named Cassidy and Nicolas Skelton decided to leave the country due to the increasing income that Nicolas, who is 32 years old, would be earning in Australia.
This meant that Cassidy would have to stay home with their son.
It seemed like an ideal situation for them, as Cassidy had just given birth to their first child.
She said that her fiancé wanted to provide more for her, which would allow her to not return to work. However, the culture shock of Australia was too much for them.
After living in New Zealand for a couple of years, the young couple had to adapt to living in a competitive and big city. For Cassidy, living in Australia felt like a different experience. She said that when she visited the country, she felt that everything was better and bigger. However, after moving to Australia, they realized that the country’s approach to work was different.
Working in Melbourne was hard to enjoy, as she said that the employers there were shocked by how they spoke to their staff members and how they were expected to work overtime. It was hard for her to accept that work was not a priority, as she and her fiancé had relocated to Australia to improve their lives as a family, but they were still not seeing each other.
The young mother noted that the lack of understanding about work-life balance and mental health issues was also a major factor that caused them to leave New Zealand. She said that the country’s laid-back culture had been taken for granted, and the hustle culture of Melbourne had been overwhelming.
She said that the hustle in Melbourne made them realize how little money was worth it for her fiancé to be out of the house for several hours a day. Although things in the city were never bad, she eventually realized that both of them were only staying there for the other person.
In a TikTok video, Ms. Skelton re-enacted her conversation with her fiancé, who asked her if she loved living in Australia. She said that, after he told her that he loved the country, she realized that they both agreed that New Zealand was the better place.
She then asked herself if she and her fiancé were pretending to like living in Australia because they think that the other person is happy there. According to Ms. Skelton, she and her fiancé were both just homesick. They also don’t like wearing shoes, and they prefer to chill out with their friends.
She stated that if the country’s biggest financial pull was more money, then they would have to make more money in Australia. They then decided to return to the country, and Ms. Skelton could no longer stay home as a stay-at mother. But, it was still worth it as it gave her the opportunity to start her own marketing business, and it allowed her fiancé to work from home.
The main reason she decided to start her own business was to be able to spend time with her family.
