The Australian radio personality Bob Rogers, who had been a fixture in the country for over 80 years, died on Wednesday.
His family said he passed away at his home in Sydney. Among the people who paid tribute to him was Derryn Hinch.
In his tribute, Hinch said he had just said goodbye to his dear friend, who he referred to as his brother.
He said that Rogers, who was 97 years old, died at his home with his wife and his two daughters by his side.
He started his career in radio at the age of 15 in Melbourne’s 3XY.
While the terms icon and legend are overused nowadays, Rogers was both. Hinch said that he had always been a fan of Rogers.
He was able to listen to him on his crystal set as a kid from New Zealand. One of his most notable achievements was when he accompanied the Beatles to Australia in the 1960s.
He was referred to as the fifth Beatle. He was also a talented tennis player and a male nude model for Cleo magazine.
He had a successful career in radio and was a host of a late-night television variety show on Channel 7.
Rogers’ program lasted for five years. In 2010, he received an Order of Australia Medal for his services to radio.
He then ended his career in 2020 after being inducted into the Hall of Fame of Radio Australia in 2002.
His family includes his wife, Jerry, and his four daughters.
