Almost four years after it closed, the iconic Sizzler restaurant in Australia will reopen for one night only.
The establishment, which was a cultural icon during the 1990s, closed its doors in November 2020. Its fans have been longing for it to return ever since.
Many have attempted to recreate the menu items of the diner that closed its shop, with many recipes and variations of the Sizzler cheese toast going viral.
However, nothing has quite hit the mark. To remedy this issue, a local restaurant in Brisbane, known as Fritzenberger, purchased an Sizzler machine.
The success of the new menu item has prompted many people to try and recreate the same Sizzler dish.
To celebrate the occasion, local radio hosts Kip Wightman and Robin Bailey are organizing a special pop-up event on July 16.
The event will feature the return of some of the restaurant’s former staff members. Aside from the cheese, they will also be dishing out other nostalgic items such as potato skins and pumpkin soup.
The famous Sizzler salad buffet will be making a return. In addition, the dessert bar will feature a variety of ice cream and toppings that are sure to satisfy any sweet tooth. The event has caused many of the restaurant’s fans to express their excitement on social media.
One of the event’s fans stated that they would like to get a table for two at the pop-up restaurant. Both Robin and Kip have been testing the new menu items and have declared that they taste just like the famous diner.
The return of Sizzler’s cheese toast to the restaurant industry was confirmed last month after the establishment was able to acquire an original Sizzler toaster at an auction. According to a report by The Courier-Mail, the team at Fritzenberger was very excited to bring the famous dish back to its customers. The restaurant uses high-quality ingredients to make its cheese toast, which are made with a combination of white bread, Reggiano cheese, and crystal salt. Executive chef Sebastian Calais said that they have kept the diner’s signature recipe. However, they have also added some new twists to it.
The iconic American diner and bowling club carpets were first spotted in Australia almost 40 years ago. The first location of the restaurant was opened in Annerley, in Brisbane’s suburban region. By 1993, the chain had 83 restaurants all across the country.
Many customers enjoyed the variety of food and drink items offered by Sizzler, such as its famous potato skins and Alfredo. However, the company’s luck started to turn and many of its restaurants started to close. The last nine locations of the restaurant chain were located in Queensland, Western Australia, and New South Wales. Due to the global pandemic, the locations of the restaurant in these regions were eventually closed.
The company’s parent company, Collins Foods, made the difficult decision to close the remaining Sizzler restaurants. The company noted that the business had struggled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
