On Friday, Imane Khelif of Algeria won the gold medal in the men’s welterweight division of the Olympic Games held in Paris. She defeated China’s Yang Liu.
The victory was a resounding success for the underdog boxer, who was thrust into the spotlight due to a gender dispute during the event.
Khelif, who was a silver medalist at the 2022 World Championships, was able to captivate her new fans with her performance.
The victory by Khelif, who got the unanimous decision, had been talked about on social media.
It was her first Olympic boxing gold medal and the first Algerian boxer to do so since Hocine Soltani in 1996.
Since the London Olympics in 2012, women’s boxing has been a part of the event. However, Khelif maintains that she was born a woman.
She said during a press conference that she was still living as a woman.
She noted that there were people who were trying to prevent her from achieving success, but she was able to overcome these obstacles.
After eight years of hard work and dedication, Khelif was finally able to achieve her dream of becoming an Olympic gold medalist.
She expressed her happiness and thanked the people of Paris and Algeria for their support.
Khelif’s victory was her best answer to the critics who doubted her abilities.
Liu, on the other hand, said that she respected everybody and that she would learn a lot from the Algerian boxer.
