A cold and wet weather system is sweeping across Australia, and it’s affecting the country’s east coast and western regions.
After experiencing a warm spring, the conditions have resulted in widespread rain and cold temperatures.
According to the Bureau of Meteorology, the low pressure system that’s causing the situation started in Western Australia and then moved southeast.
According to the BOM’s Angus Hines, the weather will mainly be characterized by cold and wet conditions moving up the east coast.
He said that the system that’s affecting the region is similar to a low pressure system that brought widespread rain to the southeast over the past couple of days.
In Sydney, the cold snap that started on Thursday morning ended the eight-day streak of temperatures reaching 24 degrees Celsius.
Temperatures have dropped significantly, with Sydney experiencing a high of only 16 degrees Celsius on Thursday and Canberra going to 13 degrees.
In Queensland, showers and thunderstorms are expected to occur in some areas, and rain could also occur in the afternoon in the Brisbane region.
According to Hines, there’s a chance that some of the showers could arrive at the coast later in the day and cause a wet finish to the day for the Gold Coast, Brisbane, and the Sunshine Coast.
For the AFL grand final in Melbourne, fans can expect sunny skies and a high of 23 degrees Celsius.
The weather conditions are expected to improve in the capital cities over the weekend. In Sydney, the forecast calls for rain and a high of 15 degrees Celsius.
The Bureau of Meteorology also warned that strong and powerful surf conditions are expected to occur along the coast. These conditions could cause problems for beachgoers such as surfers and rock fishermen.
On Friday, the temperature is expected to reach 18 degrees Celsius, but it will be cloudy with a chance of showers in the morning.
The BOM noted that the southeasterly winds will be around 15 to 25 kilometers per hour during the morning, decreasing to light during the evening.
The temperature in Brisbane is expected to reach 29 degrees Celsius on Thursday, and it will be cloudy throughout the day.
According to the weather experts, there’s an increased likelihood of showers in the afternoon and thunderstorms in the evening.
On Friday, it’s expected to be cloudy with a high of 21 degrees. Melbourne is predicted to experience partly cloudy weather on the same day with a temperature of 14 degrees.
It will be sunny during the week for the AFL grand final. On Friday, it will be 17 degrees Celsius, which will increase to a high of 23 degrees on the day of the match.
Perth will also be basking in sunshine on Thursday, with a high temperature of 28 degrees. That afternoon and evening showers are possible.
According to the BOM, there’s a chance of severe thunderstorms developing over the hills in the afternoon or evening.
These storms may be capable of producing large hail and damaging winds. Friday will be mostly cloudy with a chance of showers mainly occurring in the morning and afternoon.
Sunny conditions were observed in Adelaide on Thursday with a high of 18 degrees Celsius and a temperature of 22 degrees on Friday.
In Darwin, the temperature reached 33 degrees Celsius. There’s a chance of showers in the afternoon and evening, and thunderstorms in the inland areas. Friday’s high temperature is expected to be 34 degrees Celsius.
There is a chance of showers or thunderstorms in the early morning in Tasmania. The city of Hobart is expected to experience partly cloudy conditions on Thursday with a temperature of 13 degrees Celsius.
On Friday, the high temperature is predicted to be 17 degrees Celsius. In the nation’s capital, Canberra, the temperature is predicted to be 12 degrees Celsius. There is a chance of rain in the morning, and it’s expected that the clouds will clear by afternoon.
