A man was shot by police after he reportedly attacked his stepfather and sister who was both heavily pregnant. The incident occurred at a house in Hillside, northwest of Melbourne, on Friday morning.
A man was found with serious injuries on the front lawn.
Although the man was given CPR, he soon died.
According to Detective Dean Thomas, officers were called to the house after a woman inside reported an assault. They found a 61-year-old man with serious injuries.
The man, who was 30 years old, was armed with a weapon that was believed to be an axe or a knife. Despite their requests to drop the weapon, he kept moving toward the officers.
One of the police officers fired a shot into the house before the man went outside and damaged a police vehicle’s tire. He then moved toward the officers again.
According to Det Insp Thomas, the officers tried to avoid a confrontation by maintaining their distance.
However, the man continued to advance on them and was eventually shot by one of the officers.
The use of body cameras has revealed that the officers acted bravely. The stepson, who was shot in the lower part of the body, is currently in a stable condition.
His sister, who was at the home during the incident, is receiving medical attention. Det Insp Thomas noted that the incident was being treated as a case of family violence.
He claimed that the man, who was not a resident of the house, showed up on the morning and had an argument with his stepfather.
Details about the injuries sustained by the stepfather have not been released. Det Insp Thomas noted that the stepson had a history of mental illness.
Neighbours called the police to report the incident. A dozen officers then arrived on the scene. Two of the officers were then taken to a nearby police station to provide statements.
They will be interviewed as part of an investigation into the shooting.
