On Saturday, law enforcers arrested an armed man who was outside a rally for Donald Trump in California.
They stated that they prevented a possible assassination attempt, though the suspect was let go after posting bail.
The sheriff of the county where the suspect was arrested noted that he believed there was a thwarted attempt.
The suspect, identified as 49-year-old Miller, was apprehended after he was stopped by police for trying to enter the rally using a fake press pass.
When they searched his car, they found various fake documents, including driver’s licenses and passports, officials said.
After he was arrested, he was charged with weapons violations. The local sheriff claimed that his department prevented an assassination attempt, but federal agencies disagreed.
According to the Secret Service, it’s unlikely that Miller was trying to kill the president.
The FBI, on the other hand, is not investigating him as a potential threat, according to sources.
Miller is a far-right extremist group member who reportedly had the weapons for self-defense.
After the incident, the Secret Service noted that Trump wasn’t in danger during the rally. In a joint statement, the agency and the FBI noted that the incident didn’t affect the former president’s security.
Miller reportedly asked to speak with a lawyer after the FBI attempted to interview him. He also claimed that he was an assassin.
