A man who reportedly poured the contents of an empty can of gasoline on himself died in a hospital after suffering severe burns while aboard a boat on October 9.
The incident occurred near Scotland Island in Sydney’s north.
Emergency services responded to the boat after receiving reports of a welfare concern.
Upon reaching the scene, the Sydney Water Police talked to a man, who claimed to have activated his EPIRB device.
He then allegedly poured the contents of a can over himself and set it on fire while he was smoking.

The man was then taken to the Royal North shore Hospital in a critical condition. He later died.
The incident occurred at around 4 am on Saturday.
The NSW Police confirmed that the man died due to his injuries.
A report on the incident will be prepared for the coroner.
A team of investigators will then look into the incident to find out what happened.
