Areas such as Tasmania, South Australia, and Victoria are expected to experience warm nights and hot days from Thursday.
In some areas, the temperatures are expected to reach 12 degrees Celsius higher than average.
In Melbourne, the mercury is expected to reach 33 degrees Celsius on Friday and 34 degrees Celsius on Saturday.
In Adelaide, the high temperature is expected to reach 37 degrees Celsius on Friday.
In Sydney, the maximum temperature is expected to reach 25 degrees Celsius on Friday. The city’s forecast for the weekend is for a high of 27 degrees.
In Melbourne and Adelaide, the nights are expected to be around 22 degrees.
The extreme heat wave in South Australia and Victoria could cause electricity demand to increase.
The weather will begin to improve next week as a trough of cool air moves across the region.
