In a shocking move, President Joe Biden has issued a pardon for his son Hunter, who was facing sentencing for two criminal cases.
And, as expected, Donald Trump is not happy about it.
“Singled Out” Due to Family Ties?
Earlier today, Trump claimed that Hunter was only targeted because of his family connections to the top office. “No reasonable person who looks at the facts of Hunter’s cases can reach any other conclusion than Hunter was singled out only because he is my son – and that is wrong,” Trump said in a statement.
“Abuse and Miscarriage of Justice”
Taking to his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump lashed out at Biden’s decision, calling it an “abuse and miscarriage of justice.” He even asked whether Biden’s pardon would include the January 6 “hostages,” who have been imprisoned for years.
A Change of Heart?
Just a few months ago, the White House press secretary said that Biden wouldn’t issue a pardon for Hunter. But it seems like the President has had a change of heart. Biden has repeatedly claimed that he wouldn’t intervene in his son’s legal troubles, but it looks like he’s done just that.
Hunter’s Legal Troubles
Hunter was convicted of lying about his drug use when he bought a gun (a felony) and has also pleaded guilty to federal tax evasion charges. He was set to be sentenced in a separate criminal case on December 16.
The Reaction on Social Media
The reaction on social media was fierce, with many accusing Biden of “lying” due to his previous statements. American writer and lawyer Clay Travis wrote, “For years Joe Biden’s administration assured you Joe would never pardon Hunter. It’s really extraordinary how blatantly they lie.”
However, not everyone was upset. Conservative activist Charlie Kirk wrote, “Honestly, I don’t think this is something worth getting mad over. A father should look after his son. Joe has been so mistreated by the Democrat party and disrespected, this is the one thing he’s actually always cared about.”
Trump’s Own Legal Troubles
Meanwhile, criminal cases against Trump have come to a standstill after a sweeping ruling on presidential immunity by the Supreme Court. This means that Trump will likely never see a jail cell, even after his landmark conviction for falsifying business records in May.
A “Witch Hunt” Against Trump?
Trump spokesperson Steven Cheung told The New York Post, “The failed witch hunts against President Trump have proven that the Democrat-controlled DOJ and other radical prosecutors are guilty of weaponising the justice system.”
Biden’s Statement
In Monday’s statement, Biden reaffirmed that he wouldn’t interfere with the Justice Department’s decision-making, but added, “I have watched my son being selectively, and unfairly, prosecuted.”
