If you’re a fan of Tupperware, you might want to sit down for this one. The beloved container giant, which was on the brink of collapse earlier this year, has reportedly decided to wind up its manufacturing and sales operations in Australia.
This could result in a staggering 10,000 consultants and 300 warehouse staff losing their jobs.
What’s Behind the Sudden Exit?
According to Ben Fordham, who broke the news on 2GB, Tupperware is shifting its focus to core markets in the US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, China, India, Korea, and Malaysia. And, unfortunately, Australia isn’t part of the mix.
A Tupperware Consultant Speaks Out
Maria, a Tupperware consultant, revealed to Fordham that the brand has announced it’s “not proceeding” in Australia. “They’re only keeping eight countries open out of 70 and unfortunately Australia is not one of them,” she said.
What This Means for Aussie Consultants
For consultants like Maria, who have dedicated their careers to Tupperware, the news is devastating. “Some of these women have made it their career, and they’re the ones that I feel sorry for,” she said. “But the writing has been on the wall for us oldies. We’ve been in Tupperware for 15 years. The writing has been on the wall for, I’d say, maybe four years.”
A Quick History of Tupperware in Australia
Did you know that Australia hosted its first-ever “Tupperware party” back in 1961? The 78-year-old food container company has been a staple in many Australian households, but it seems its time is up.
The Rise and Fall of Tupperware
Tupperware kickstarted bankruptcy proceedings earlier this year, citing financial struggles due to the economic environment. In October, US-based company Party Products bought the legacy brand, marking a huge change for the company.
What’s Next for Tupperware?
In a statement, Tupperware’s creditors at Party Products LLC said the company will focus on offering Tupperware products in certain core markets globally. “Operations in these global core markets will continue uninterrupted and customers will be able to purchase products from independent Tupperware sales consultants, Tupperware ecommerce sites and retail partners.”
What This Means for Aussie Customers
While the news may come as a shock to Aussie consultants and customers, it’s worth noting that Tupperware products will still be available for purchase online and through retail partners.
The End of an Era?
As Tupperware exits the Australian market, it marks the end of an era for the brand in the country. But for the thousands of consultants who will be affected, it’s a devastating blow.
