A severe heatwave is set to engulf four Australian states, with the Bureau of Meteorology issuing warnings for millions of people.
If you live in NSW, Queensland, Western Australia, or South Australia, it’s time to prepare for some sweltering days ahead.
Western Australia: Sizzling Heat and Stormy Weather
In Western Australia, temperatures are expected to soar into the low to mid-40s, with overnight minimums in the mid to high 20s. While the Kimberly region has seen some relief, the heat is expected to shift west into the Pilbara and Gascoyne regions over the weekend. Temperatures above 40°C are forecasted for the coming days, making it essential to take precautions to stay safe.
Who’s Most at Risk?
The heatwave is particularly dangerous for older people, children, and those with medical conditions. If your home isn’t equipped to handle the heat, consider seeking shelter in a library, community centre, or shopping centre.
Storms Looming in the North West
The north west regions of the country are bracing for storms, with areas from WA’s Broome to the Top End expected to receive between 50mm and 100mm of rain in the coming days. Make sure to stay indoors and avoid travel if possible.
South Australia: Sweltering Heat and Humidity
In South Australia, temperatures are expected to reach the mid-30s to low 40s, with heatwave conditions particularly severe in the state’s north east around Moomba. If you’re planning to venture outdoors, don’t forget to pack plenty of water and sunscreen.
Queensland: Severe Heatwave Hits Central Regions
Queensland is facing a severe heatwave in central parts of the state, with Brisbane and the Gold Coast experiencing heatwave conditions. Further inland, temperatures are expected to reach the high 30s to low 40s, making it feel like you’re walking into a furnace. Overnight minimums will offer little relief, reaching up to the low 30s.
NSW: Heatwave Warnings and Flash Flooding
On the east coast, a region of low-pressure air is creating instability, bringing heavy rain and a risk of flash flooding to NSW. Minor flood warnings have been issued for areas surrounding the Warrego, Paroo, and Barwon rivers. If you live in the north east of the state, from Tamworth through to Moree and Lismore, be prepared for heatwave warnings.
Sydney and Victoria: Stormy Weather and Cooler Temperatures
In Sydney, temperatures are expected to reach up to 33°C on Saturday, dropping down to 24°C on Monday. A southerly wind will bring cooler temperatures to Victoria from Sunday, with a predicted maximum of 20°C down from Saturday’s high of 26°C.
Stay safe, Australia! Remember to stay hydrated, check on your loved ones, and take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.
