Sam Kerr, the Matildas captain, has suffered a major setback in her recovery from knee surgery, her club Chelsea confirmed on Saturday.
The 31-year-old star has been out of action since January, when she ruptured her ACL and underwent surgery. Unfortunately, her return to the field is still months away.
A Longer Recovery Than Expected
Typically, elite athletes can recover from ACL surgery within 12 months. However, Chelsea coach Sonia Bompastor revealed that Kerr’s recovery will take an additional two to three months, pushing her return to February or March.
“I would say Sam, we are looking to maybe have her back with us in February, March, not before that,” Bompastor said. “She didn’t start yet to train, even being modified with the group, so she’s still on her individual process rehab and I think it will take at least two or three more months for her to be fit enough to be with the squad.”
Impact on the Matildas and Women’s Super League
Kerr’s delayed return means she will miss most of the Women’s Super League season, only returning for the final few months. Matildas interim coach Tom Sermanni had expected Kerr to return to the squad in the next FIFA international window in February, but that now seems unlikely.
The Mystery Surrounding Kerr’s Recovery
In a BBC podcast in September, Kerr hinted that she had “a little bit more going on than an ACL.” However, Sermanni claimed he was unaware of any additional issues affecting her recovery. Kerr’s cautious approach to her rehabilitation is understandable, especially given the importance of ensuring her body is fully ready before making a comeback.
Supporting Her Partner, Kristie Mewis
One silver lining is that Kerr will have more time to support her partner, Kristie Mewis, who is carrying their first child. The couple announced their pregnancy in November, but unfortunately, their joyful news was marred by homophobic comments on social media.
The Power Couple
Kerr and Mewis have been open about their relationship since 2021, regularly sharing photos and updates on social media. In an interview with People Magazine, Mewis said, “I think just being out and being two girls in love, I think if we can change one or two people’s lives, and the way that they feel about each other and how comfortable they feel, then that means a lot to me.”
As Kerr and Mewis prepare for the arrival of their baby, fans will have to wait a little longer for the Matildas captain’s return to the field.
