A Two-Year Experiment Comes to an End
Sydney radio presenter Chris O’Keefe has announced his departure from 2GB Drive, ending a two-year stint that failed to capture the hearts of listeners.
Despite a slight uptick in the latest radio ratings survey, O’Keefe struggled to build a loyal audience in the competitive timeslot.
The Numbers Don’t Lie
The latest survey released on Thursday showed O’Keefe’s show had gained a 7.4 share, up from 6.8 and 5.9 in the previous two surveys. However, these numbers are a far cry from what the station had hoped for when they handed O’Keefe the plum role in November 2022.
A New Chapter Beckons
On Friday, O’Keefe took to his radio show to announce his departure, revealing his plans to quit media and start a political advocacy company. “I’ll be wrapping up as the radio host on Drive at 6pm,” he said, thanking his wife, broadcaster Yvonne Sampson.
What’s Next for Chris O’Keefe?
When asked about his future plans, O’Keefe didn’t hold back. “What’s next? You know I love politics. I’m going to open my own media and political advocacy business.” He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to work in journalism, saying, “It’s been an absolute privilege every day I’ve worked in this job.”
A Changing of the Guard
O’Keefe took over the 2GB Drive host role from Jim Wilson, who stepped down in November 2022 to pursue opportunities with Nine television. During his time on the show, O’Keefe struggled to fill the void left by Wilson, a beloved and experienced broadcaster.
A Heartfelt Goodbye
In a heartfelt goodbye, O’Keefe thanked a roll call of 2GB executives and on-air talent, including Sydney breakfast anchor Ben Fordham, who is believed to have sponsored him into the chair. He said, “I believe this is the best decision for me, the best decision for my family.”
