A blistering heatwave is set to sweep across almost half of Australia, bringing extreme highs and fire dangers to states in the south-east.
If you’re planning to step out this weekend, make sure you’re prepared for the heat!
The Heatwave Hits: Where and When
The heatwave will impact the Northern Territory, western Queensland, and pockets of Victoria, South Australia, and New South Wales between Friday and the start of next week. Maximum temperatures in parts of Victoria and NSW are expected to be the hottest in four to five years on Sunday and Monday.
Adelaide and Melbourne: Get Ready for a Sizzling Weekend
Residents in Adelaide and Melbourne could experience their earliest summer day over 40C in 18 years on Sunday as temperatures soar. Melbourne, in particular, is expected to endure its warmest day over 40C in 18 years.
The Science Behind the Heatwave
According to Sky News Meteorologist Alison Osborne, the heat being pushed into the south-east is due to a high pressure system shifting into the Tasman Sea, combined with a low pressure trough. This will result in a northerly airstream over South Australia, leading to high temperatures across the state this weekend, and then into the east by Monday.
Heatwave Conditions: What to Expect
Heatwave conditions are forecast on Sunday for parts of the NT, SA, NSW, Victoria, and Queensland. Adelaide is set to smash its December average by 13C on Sunday, with a top of 40C forecast for the city, along with elevated fire dangers. Port Augusta is set for a sizzling 41C on Saturday and 44C on Sunday, while Coober Pedy in the state’s north is bracing for a top of 43C this weekend.
Northern Territory and NSW: Sizzling Temperatures Ahead
Alice Springs is set to swelter through 41C on Saturday, followed by 43C on Sunday and Monday. Meanwhile, parts of Victoria’s Mallee and Wimmera regions and southern NSW are set to record their hottest heat this weekend since at least 2019, with temperatures forecast in the high 40s.
Fire Dangers on the Rise
Fire dangers will rise across South Australia on Sunday and peak on Monday as winds strengthen and temperatures surpass 45C in some areas in the state’s east. Victorians are on alert for a high and extreme fire danger on Monday as the state is plagued by hot and windy conditions.
Cool Change Ahead
The good news is that temperatures are expected to drop significantly early next week as a cool change moves across the south-east on Monday, possibly bringing storms.
