What You Need to Know
The Department of Health has issued a health alert, warning Western Australians to be on the lookout for symptoms of measles after a returned traveller from Southeast Asia tested positive for the disease.
The Traveller’s Journey
The infected person visited several public venues in the metropolitan area between November 30 and December 6, while they were still infectious. Some of the locations include Perth International Airport, Armadale Health Service Emergency Department, St John Health Armadale General Practice clinic in Armadale, and several other locations. You can find the full list of exposure locations via the health alert.
What to Do If You’ve Been Exposed
Dr Paul Armstrong, Director of the Communicable Disease Control, is urging anyone who visited these locations during the specified dates and times to monitor for symptoms. If you start showing signs of measles, wear a mask and seek medical care. But before you head to a clinic or emergency department, call ahead to let them know you might have measles. This will ensure you don’t infect others.
Recognizing the Symptoms
So, what are the symptoms of measles? Early signs include fever, tiredness, cough, runny nose, and sore eyes. About three or four days later, a red non-itchy rash usually appears on the face and spreads to the rest of the body.
What to Do If You’re Concerned
If you’ve visited an exposure location during the specified times, keep an eye out for symptoms for the next 18 days. Remember, these locations may be updated, so it’s essential to check the Department of Health website for the latest advice.
The Importance of Vaccination
Measles has been eliminated from Australia for over 25 years, thanks to high vaccination coverage. However, imported cases and small outbreaks still occur, usually due to residents or visitors who get infected while overseas. If you’re planning to travel overseas, make sure to see your general practitioner or a travel doctor to discuss appropriate vaccinations before you go.
