A devastating incident has shaken the tight-knit community of Armidale in northern NSW, leaving residents in shock and mourning.
An Absolutely Wonderful Man Lost
On Saturday, a car collided with a group of cyclists participating in the Long Swamp graded scratch 30km race run by the Armidale Cycling Club, resulting in the tragic death of a man in his 60s.
Tributes have begun to pour in for the “absolutely wonderful man” who was killed, with the Armidale Bicycle Centre extending their deepest condolences to the grieving family and friends.
Community in Shock
Former club president Mark Bullen described the community as “numb” and “devastated” by the loss. “Every person I spoke to, they said they’re numb,” he said. “It has devastated the community and it’s going to be ongoing for quite a long time.”
Urgent Call for Road Safety
In the wake of this tragic incident, local state MP Brendan Moylan has urged members of the community to be extra cautious on the roads, particularly during the Christmas period. “I’ve been the member now for just over 4 months and unfortunately I have received accident notifications basically every week,” he said. “Please take it easy on the roads, particularly over the Christmas period.”

A female driver in her 30s was trapped in the car before being released by first responders and flown to John Hunter Hospital in critical condition.
