As Victorians gear up for a warm Christmas period, multiple bushfires have ravaged the western region of the state, prompting authorities to evacuate residents from their homes.
The Grampians National Park Blaze
Residents in Halls Gap, located in Victoria’s west, were told to leave immediately as a bushfire at Grampians National Park raged out of control. The fire has spread to over 28,000 hectares, with more than 350 firefighters battling to contain it.
State Response Controller Garry Cook warned that the fire could burn “for weeks” due to the rugged terrain, making it difficult for firefighters to access the area. “The terrain is also inaccessible to many of our crews on the ground, so we’re doing our best to attack the fire from the air where safe to do so,” Cook said in a statement.
The Grampians fire has been fueled by strong winds and warm weather, with temperatures expected to soar into the mid-late 30s on Christmas and Boxing Day.
Other Affected Areas
In addition to the Grampians National Park blaze, other areas have been impacted by bushfires. Residents in Lake Fyans, Mafeking, and Watgania were also told to evacuate the region.
In the Macedon Ranges, just north-west of Melbourne, another blaze has sparked calls for locals to evacuate immediately.
The small town of Bullengarook is expected to be impacted by the out-of-control blaze, although emergency services note that firefighters have slowed the spread of the fire.
Meanwhile, residents in The Gurdies, located about 100kms south-east of the Melbourne CBD, have been issued a “watch and act” warning as a bushfire rages at a local nature reserve.
Safety Advice for Those in Impacted Areas
Aussies in the impacted areas have been told that leaving immediately “is the safest option, before conditions become too dangerous”. For those who are unable to leave, Vic Emergency has asked those in the impacted areas to shelter in their home, close all doors, windows, and vents, and stay in a room with two exits.
If you’re unable to be indoors, authorities recommend finding a body of water or sheltering in a large open area like a football oval.
As the situation continues to unfold, stay tuned for updates and follow the instructions of local authorities to ensure your safety.
