A Legacy Cut Short: Bob Dunlap Passes Away at 73
Bob “Slim” Dunlap, the legendary guitarist for the iconic American rock band The Replacements, has left us too soon.
At the age of 73, Dunlap succumbed to complications from a stroke he suffered in 2012. His family confirmed the news in a heartfelt statement.
A Poignant Farewell
According to his family, Dunlap passed away surrounded by loved ones at home, with his favorite music playing in the background. As they played his “Live at the Turf Club” CD, featuring his rendition of “Hillbilly Heaven”, he slipped away peacefully. It was a fitting tribute to a musician who left an indelible mark on the rock scene.
From Janitor to Rockstar
Formed in 1979, The Replacements gained a cult following with their unique blend of punk and alternative rock. Dunlap joined the band in 1987, replacing Bob Stinson as the lead guitarist. With his understated style and remarkable talent, he earned the nickname “the replacement Replacement”. But few knew that Dunlap was once a janitor at Minneapolis’ famous First Avenue venue, where The Replacements played some of their earliest shows. His contribution to the venue’s history was later honored with a mural.
A Life of Music and Family
Dunlap was not only an incredibly gifted musician but also a devoted family man. He was married to Chrissie, with whom he shared three children. It was his wife who encouraged him to join The Replacements, a decision that would change his life forever.
A Solo Career Born from Humility
Although he launched his solo career, Dunlap was known to have said, “I hate it, personally. I’d rather just play guitar and let the other guy lose all the money.” Yet, he went on to release two solo albums, The New Old Me (1993) and Times Like These (1996). His music was deeply personal, inspired by the likes of Bruce Springsteen, who praised Dunlap’s work as “deeply touching and emotional”.
A Life Cut Short
Tragedy struck in 2012 when Dunlap suffered a stroke that left him paralyzed, able to move only his head. The long-term complications from that event ultimately led to his passing. His death is a tremendous loss to the music world, but his legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched with his music.
