A devastating crash on the Hume Hwy in NSW’s Riverina region has left one man dead and 13 others injured.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning, and police are now investigating whether driver fatigue was the culprit.
What Happened?
A Greyhound bus carrying 40 passengers, including tourists and people heading home for the holidays, crashed into the rear of a B-double truck on the highway at Kyeamba, about 50km south of Wagga Wagga. The bus driver, a 32-year-old Victorian man, died at the scene despite being treated by paramedics.
Possible Causes of the Crash
Police believe the heavy vehicle in front of the bus may have slowed down as it went up a steep incline, and this change in speed might have contributed to the crash. The investigation will also look into whether the bus driver saw the truck ahead of them before the crash.
Passengers Injured
Thirteen passengers were treated for injuries, including broken bones and lacerations. One passenger suffered a broken leg, while others sustained cuts, bruises, and a fractured nose. Luckily, none of the passengers had life-threatening injuries.
Eyewitness Account
One passenger, Lily Harper, was sleeping when the bus crashed. She woke up to find herself injured and panicked when she realized they couldn’t get off the bus without smashing the window. “The worry was, at least for me, that another car or something would hit us,” she said.
Warning from Paramedics
The tragedy has prompted a warning from paramedics as traffic increases over the festive period. “There’s just going to be more traffic on the road, (drivers) just need to be aware and take more safe precautions. Make sure you wear a seatbelt, have plenty of rest,” said NSW Ambulance inspector Jennifer Barker.
Bus Company’s Response
Greyhound Australia expressed its condolences in a statement, saying, “We are heartbroken that the driver … has died after a motor vehicle accident… This is a tragic incident, and our deepest sympathies go out to his family and friends.” The company is working closely with authorities to assist in the investigation and providing support to those involved.
As the investigation continues, authorities are urging drivers to be extra cautious on the roads, especially during the holiday season. Stay safe, and stay alert!
