A devastating incident has left a family shattered on Christmas Day, as a 19-year-old man lost his life in a firework explosion in Melbourne’s outer north.
Fireworks Prove Fatal in Kalkallo Incident
Police were called to the scene at a residential development area in Kalkallo around 9 pm, where they found the Whittlesea man with critical injuries. Unfortunately, he died at the scene, leaving his loved ones in shock and grief.
A Heart-Wrenching Warning from Police
Acting Senior Sergeant Fiona Parvin emphasized that Christmas Day would never be the same again for the victim’s family. “Fireworks should not be handled by the public. They’re not toys; they’re explosive devices that can cause harm and even death,” she said.
The Risks of Illegal Fireworks
The incident occurred in an estate being cleared for new housing on Pittsburgh Road and Cloverton Boulevard. Parvin warned that with New Year’s celebrations just around the corner, Victorians should steer clear of illegal fireworks and instead attend official displays in the city or at suburban festivals.
“We know that people can still access fireworks online or through word of mouth, but it’s crucial to understand that they’re illegal in Victoria and can lead to serious consequences, including fines and charges,” she said.
The Hidden Dangers of Fireworks
Parvin also cautioned that illegal fireworks could spark grass fires, which is a significant concern as Victoria faces extreme weather conditions this summer. “Not only do you risk harming yourself or others, but you also risk setting the state on fire. It’s just not worth it,” she warned.
What to Do If You Find a Firework
If you come across a firework, leave it alone and contact the police immediately. If you’re aware of people illegally selling fireworks, you can report them to your local police station or make an anonymous report through Crime Stoppers.
Investigation Underway
Police are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the man’s death and will prepare a report for the coroner. As the authorities work to determine what happened, the community is left to mourn the loss of a young life, and to reflect on the importance of firework safety.
