A massive search operation has turned into a recovery mission after a 15-year-old student was swept off rocks on the New South Wales Central Coast on Christmas Eve.
Luca Bennett, a promising young basketballer and student at The Scots College in Bellevue Hill, Sydney, was with friends at North Avoca when tragedy struck.
A Fateful Day at the Beach
Luca and his friends were standing on rocks at North Avoca when a strong wave hit, sweeping them into the water. While two of his mates managed to climb back onto the rocks, Luca disappeared beneath the surface. The group’s terrifying ordeal began around 3 pm on Tuesday, triggering a large-scale response from emergency services, including Marine Area Command, NSW Ambulance, Surf Life Saving, Central Coast Council lifeguards, and the Westpac chopper.
The Search Effort
Rescuers scoured the waters and skies on Tuesday, but unfortunately, they couldn’t find any sign of Luca. The search operation resumed on Christmas Day, but despite their best efforts, there was no sign of the missing teenager. Early Thursday morning, NSW Police confirmed that the rescue mission had entered a recovery phase, following expert advice.
A Tragic Reminder of Ocean Dangers
Police said the search mission had turned to a recovery operation, a devastating blow to Luca’s family and friends. Brisbane Water Police District Inspector Ben Campbell warned of the dangers of the ocean, particularly around rocks. “It’s a very tragic incident. I feel for the family at this time of year. It is a timely reminder of how dangerous the rocks can be around the ocean and how everyone has to be really careful.”
Tributes Pour In for Luca
As news of the tragedy spread, tributes began pouring in on social media for the popular student and talented young basketballer. Friends and classmates shared heartfelt messages, remembering Luca’s energy and enthusiasm. “Rest easy Luca, gone way too soon. Your energy will live on,” one friend wrote. “Rest in peace my guy, we will miss you,” another mate added.
A Touching Tribute at the Scene
On Christmas Day, friends gathered near the spot where Luca disappeared, carving a poignant message into the face of the rocks: “Luca Bennett 2009-2024 FOREVER 15.” The touching tribute is a testament to the impact Luca had on those around him.
