A Devastating Conclusion
Police have confirmed that a body has been located off the NSW Central Coast, bringing an end to the massive search effort for 15-year-old Luca Bennett, who was swept out to sea on Christmas Eve.
The Search Effort
Luca was at North Avoca Beach with two friends when a powerful wave hit, sending them into the water. His friends managed to escape and alert lifeguards, but Luca was nowhere to be found. A large-scale search operation was launched, involving emergency crews, surf clubs, police, and marine rescue teams.
A Mother’s Heartbreaking Confirmation
On Friday afternoon, Luca’s mother, Michelle Bennett, took to social media to share the tragic news. “Beautiful Luca J has been found,” she wrote, revealing that dolphins had been circling the rocks at North Avoca Beach since early morning, and the ocean had brought her son’s body ashore. Michelle expressed her family’s immense gratitude to the search teams, family, friends, and community.
Tributes Pour In
Central Coast councillor Jared Wright also paid tribute to Luca, saying it was a sad day for the community, but inspiring to see the support for the family during this difficult time.
Fundraiser Launched to Support the Family
A fundraising campaign has been set up to ease the financial burden on Luca’s family as they cope with their loss. The campaign has already raised over $75,000, exceeding its initial target of $50,000. Donors have been pouring out their hearts, sharing messages of love and support for the family.
Remembering Luca
Luca’s friend, Emma Power, described the 15-year-old as “a friend to many” with a “twinkle in his eye” and a boisterous, infectious laugh. He was a talented basketballer who loved giving back to his community. Emma wrote, “That’s the thing about Luca – everyone loved being around him, and you always walked away with a full heart and a smile on your face.”
