The house where it all began for legendary rock band AC/DC has been torn down, leaving fans heartbroken and outraged.
The iconic Young House, located on Burleigh Street in Sydney’s inner west, was the childhood home of Malcolm, Angus, and George Young. The family moved into the house in 1965 after migrating from Scotland in 1963.
A Rich History
The Young brothers went on to become music legends, with Malcolm and Angus founding AC/DC in 1973, and George co-founding the Easybeats in 1964. The house was a symbol of their humble beginnings and a testament to their rise to fame. The brothers attended local schools, including Burwood Primary School and Ashfield Boys High School, where they drew inspiration for their iconic onstage outfits from their school uniforms.
A Mural to Remember
In recognition of the Young brothers’ contribution to music, Burwood Council commissioned a mural dedicated to Angus and Malcolm, which was painted on a nearby wall. The mural has become a popular spot for fans to take photos and pay tribute to the rock legends.
The Demolition
The house was sold in February 2023 for $5.8 million and was quietly demolished in recent weeks. Fans were shocked and saddened by the news, taking to social media to express their outrage and disappointment. Many believed that the house should have been preserved as a museum or a tourist destination, rather than being torn down.
A Loss for Music Fans
The demolition of the Young House has been met with widespread criticism, with fans calling it a “disgrace” and a “destruction of history.” The house was not only a significant part of AC/DC’s history but also a symbol of Australian music and cultural heritage. Fans have suggested that the house could have been sold as a museum or that small pieces could have been sold as souvenirs.
A Tribute to the Young Brothers
Earlier this year, Burwood Council commissioned an AC/DC Choir Medley to honour Angus and Malcolm. The medley was performed by a 300-strong choir at a council-organised Burwood Street Party. While the tribute was a nice gesture, it cannot replace the loss of the Young House.
