A devastating light plane crash in the waters off the New South Wales Mid North Coast has claimed the lives of two people.
The incident occurred on Saturday, with emergency services rushing to the scene near Nambucca Heads, about 50 kilometres south of Coffs Harbour, just after 4 pm.
Emergency Response
The Westpac Rescue helicopter was quickly dispatched to the area, along with water police, ambulance crews, and other marine-based emergency services.
A short time later, wreckage from the plane was spotted approximately 1.5 kilometres off the coast.
Investigation Underway
NSW Police have confirmed that both the pilot and passenger of the aircraft died at the scene. The identities of the deceased are yet to be formally released.
The Mid North Coast Police District and Marine Area Command have launched an investigation into the crash, with the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB) providing assistance to determine the cause of the fatal incident.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner as the investigation continues.
