If you’re active on social media, you might have noticed a disturbing trend: young people intentionally sunburning tan lines into their skin.
The trend, which has gained popularity on TikTok and Instagram, has experts worried about the long-term consequences of Gen Z’s obsession with sun-kissed skin.
What’s Behind the Trend?
Influencers on TikTok and Instagram are flaunting their tan lines, with some even sharing their “tanning routines.”
The hashtag #sunburnttanlines has racked up over 200 million views on TikTok, with users encouraging each other to tan during peak UV hours.
But what’s troubling is that these videos often promote tanning during high levels of ultraviolet radiation, ignoring the warnings and instead using the UV index as a tool to get the perfect tan.
The Dangers of Tanning
Cancer Council CEO Mark Nevin warns that there’s no such thing as a safe tan. “Young people believe tan lines are desirable and are on social media seeking sunburns and suntans,” he says.
“This behavior is dangerous as young people are purposefully exposing themselves to harmful UV radiation and putting themselves at an increased risk of developing skin cancer.”
The Risks of UV Radiation
UV radiation is present even on cooler or overcast days, making it a silent killer. Just 15 minutes of unprotected exposure can cause damage to the skin and increase the risk of skin cancer.
In fact, nearly 2,000 Australians die every year from skin cancer, with two in three developing skin cancer in their lifetime.
The Role of Social Media
Social media personalities like Laura Henshaw and Belle Bower are speaking out against the trend, emphasizing the importance of sun safety.
“This is not something we should be doing for aesthetic reasons,” Henshaw says. “The higher the UV, the more dangerous the sun is, and the more you have to protect yourself.”
How to Stay Safe in the Sun
So, what can you do to protect yourself from the sun’s harmful rays? The Cancer Council recommends adopting these seven daily habits:
- Download the SunSmart Global UV app to check your local UV index
- Carry broad-spectrum sunscreen with you
- Wear a broad-brimmed hat
- Keep a long-sleeved shirt handy
- Wear sunglasses
- Reapply sunscreen every two hours
- Remember the helpful rhyme: “Slip, slop, slap, seek and slide”
Take Action Against Skin Cancer
The Cancer Council’s new campaign, End The Trend, aims to challenge young Australians’ attitudes towards sun tanning and encourage them to use all forms of sun protection when the UV level is three or above. By embracing your natural skin tone and taking steps to protect yourself from the sun, you can reduce your risk of developing skin cancer.
So, the next time you’re tempted to join the tanning trend, remember: a sunburned tan line is not worth risking your life. Stay sun-safe, and let’s work together to end the trend.
