A tragic car accident has shaken the small community of Yirrkala in the Northern Territory’s East Arnhem region, leaving four people dead.
The crash occurred on Wednesday morning, just after 7:15 am, on Gunyipinya Rd.
What Happened?
A grey Toyota Corolla, reported stolen from a home in Nhulunbuy about 18km north, was seen driving dangerously around the Yirrkala Community.
The car crashed head-on with a Toyota Prado, resulting in the deaths of three occupants of the Corolla and one person inside the Prado. Another person in the Prado suffered minor injuries.
Investigation Underway
The police are still investigating the incident and are urging anyone who witnessed the Corolla driving recklessly to come forward.

A Community in Mourning
The Yirrkala Community, made up of 13 distinct clan groups, is in shock. The area is home to 657 people, with 524 identifying as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander.
This tragic incident is the first to claim lives on NT roads in 2025.
