In an incredible turn of events, 23-year-old Hadi Nazari, who disappeared while hiking in Kosciuszko National Park almost two weeks ago, has been found alive.
NSW Police confirmed the news on Wednesday afternoon, bringing an end to a massive search and rescue operation.
The Search Effort
Nazari, a student from Berwick in Melbourne’s outer south-east, went missing on Boxing Day after becoming separated from his friends during a multi-day hike.
The last time he was seen was around 2:30 pm on December 26, descending the Hannels Spur trail.
A multi-agency search team, including police, the State Emergency Service, ambulance, VRA Rescue NSW, and national parks officers, had been searching for him since the day after he disappeared.
A Glimmer of Hope
Late on December 31, searchers found rubbish and hiking poles believed to belong to Nazari near Kosciuszko Creek, which became the focus area of the search.
Other items belonging to him were also found in recent days, giving his family and the search team a glimmer of hope. Despite the challenging conditions, with dense bushland making it difficult for searchers to see their feet, the team refused to give up.
The Miracle Call
Nazari’s family received a call from him on Wednesday, informing them that he was alive and okay. “We talked to him… he is OK… he is fine,” his family told Nine News.
“We are very happy… it is the happiest day of our lives.” The family’s joy is undeniable, and the news has brought relief to the entire community.
The Rescue Effort
Nazari was found by other hikers about 20 kilometers from the main command post in Geehi. As of 4 pm on Wednesday, police were still working to reach him.
The rescue effort was led by Riverina Police District acting superintendent Jill Gibson, who had stated earlier that the team was not giving up hope of finding Nazari alive.
“This remains an active search and rescue, and we are not giving up hope of finding him alive,” she said.
This incredible story of survival and rescue is a testament to the dedication and perseverance of the search team and the power of hope.
We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
